Fire Cupping Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment 03/27/08

What is Fire Cupping? Sounds like some sort of torture, kinda looks like it too! Well in our research here is some helpful tips and information that you might find helpful in a search for better health. This type of treatment is considered a form of Alternative Medicine Therapy in traditional Chinese Medicine.

Fire cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum next to the patient's skin. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) it involves placing glass, plastic, or bamboo cups on the skin with a vacuum. The therapy is used to relieve what is called "stagnation" in TCM terms, and is used in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping is also used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain. Its advocates claim it has other applications as well. This technique, in varying forms, has also been found in the folk medicine of Vietnam, the Balkans, modern Greece, Mexico, and Russia, among other places, including Iran where it is called 'bod-kesh' meaning literally 'pull with air'. Cupping was also commonly used as a Eastern European Jewish folk remedy, with the Yiddish name banke.

My father just recently enjoyed this treatment in China on a trip he took with his wife. He did mention that it was not painful! That is good, because I was starting to wonder!

I am always up for a new type of Alternative Medicine. Although Fire Cupping is not new at all, Fire cupping is a 2,500-year-old method to increase the circulation of Qi and blood.

Your skin may feel like it is being pulled tightly and you can feel suction.

Fire Cupping is used to treat ailments such as asthma, cough, and chest tightness, cold and flu symptoms, gastrointestinal difficulties, menstrual pain, neck and shoulder pain, low back pain, and sciatica.
