Any Aesthetician will tell you, the more time you spend in the sun without proper skin care protection, the more your skin will age. It is also important to maintain a regular skin care regimen. Going to bed with out washing your skin and not drinking enough water are very easy fixes. We are all trying to fight the war on aging. Some of us were born with genes that keep us looking young forever, and for those who were not, let's take a look at how you can change your skin.
I have been a licensed Aesthetician in the state of Arizona for well over 10 years. The biggest culprit of damaged skin I have seen was caused from over exposure to the sun, smoking, poor eating habits and poor skin care routines. I have heard it all a million times! The best advise I gave anyone was to maintain a regular balance of facials and / or regular home maintanence program (which by the way does not have to cost a fortune) and a good diet. Any blood flow and excression of toxins in the body will always improve good skin, so bump up the workouts! Your skin is a sponge and it will filter out all impurities, so the less impurities you have in your body the better. Here are a few inexpensive ideas I have passed along throughout my years:
- Use a gym or health club/spa steam sauna. This is an excellent place to get a gentle exfoliation and mask routine down. The pores will be open and ready to soak up vitamins and minerals. ( not to be done if you have excessive cystic acne)
- Warm and cold compresses. This will help to stimulate the skin and remove old blood stimulating new blood to reenter the skins surface)
- Take Multi Vitamins and Minerals. This will help nourish the body.
- Exfoliate at least two times a week.
- Cucumbers on the eyes not only feel amazing ( and yes some spas really do use them in treatments) but they also stimulate removal of water retention and swelling which cause the eyes to have dark circles and look swollen ( Just understand though, some dark circles are genetic and this might not be a "cure", just a quick fix)
- Some over the counter facial washes are good quality. Pricey is not always better. Try Cetaphil, for oily and / or dry skin. This product has been around for ages and it is very gentle on the skin.
- Do not smoke. Not only is it terrible for you, it ages your skin tremendously. This might not really be a quick fix, but, it can create quick results. This is really true, when you are a smoker and you are getting extractions, the Aesthetician can smell it! The toxins are filling your pores and damaging your skin too. Sometimes, when doing extractions I have seen a little bit of "smoke" pop out. It's weird, maybe I was imagining things, but, I have heard it from more than one Aesthetician! The chemicals wreak havoc and break down the collagen in your skin. Leaving your skin less elastic. The sagging and loose structure in the face can make you age so quickly.

- Phase 1 00 - 15 years
- In a baby, the fibroblast is programmed to produce only structural glyco-proteins and mucopolysaccharids. These 2 building elements give the skin its softness and suppleness, allowing the rapid growth of the baby.
- Phase 2 15 - 25 years
- Elastin and collagen, which are the tightening agents, are only produced later on, in order to leave the skin supple to accommodate the baby's growth (should they be produced earlier, the skin would "break" as what happens when stretch marks appear).
- A sharp increase in elastin production occurs from 15 to 25 years of age when the body reaches it full maturity.
- Phase 3 30 - 45 years
- After 30 years of age, a decreased production of elastin occurs and this decrease can be accelerated by sun exposure and particularly UVA, which destroys elastic fibers. One should avoid sun exposure from that age and also before, to prevent any further damage.
- Sun exposure should really be limited your entire life to prevent premature ageing.
- Phase 4 45 - 65 years
- From the age of 45, the constitutive elements of the connective tissue are produced in very low quantities.
